Today, the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) ended the historic COVID pandemic related mask mandate. The mandate required both TLC drivers and passengers in NYC wear masks while in a for-hire vehicle.
As with almost everything that relates to COVID and mandates, some are celebrating the decision, while others are upset and/or uncertain about the wisdom of lifting mask mandates. Whichever side you come out on, the lifting of a the COVID pandemic mask mandate is a major moment in NYC returning to its new post pandemic “normal”. As the TLC states, it still encourages drivers and passengers wear mask.
Our opinion is common decency should prevail and perhaps mandates at this point are ineffective. Similar to how some people hold the door open for others (although it’s not mandated 👀), if you see a TLC driver wear a mask, one probably should put theirs on, out of respect. Vice versa, if an elderly or immunocompromised person enters a TLC car with a mask on, it might be nice for a driver to put on a mask to be courteous. The post pandemic period has created new social norms, which we all have to adjust to.
