1,000 new EV-only TLC plate. Question: where are 1,000 people charging these vehicles? Batteries degrade over time, just like our cell phone batteries. They need to be replaced. The costs of materials for these batteries are skyrocketing due to difficulty in mining the materials. I’m assuming some if not most of these vehicles will be Tesla’s. That Tesla brand is quickly becoming hated by NYC Progressives because of its major shareholder’s politics. Does it make sense to purchase a Tesla? Putting aside politics, Teslas are relatively expensive. Do the economics of driving FHV make sense with Teslas? Oh, but the inconvenience of driving an EV vehicle in NYC. Good luck. I’d rather own a heavy, gas-guzzling noisy WAV vehicle. At least I can purchase gasoline wherever and whenever I want and I’m only at the pump for 5 minutes at most.

Teslas are relatively expensive but so are WAV vehicles especially if your trying to convert it from non wav to wav. And guess what teslas qualify for that wav cars don’t, Uber/ lyft black. So while it make take you the whole day to make 400 to 500$ I can make that in one to two trips and I have the potential double what you make DAILY so yes it may be expensive then most cars depending what model and year you purchase but in the long run it’s way more beneficial and let’s not talk about the savings you receive from charging your car rather pumping gas, if you know the right times to charge your car ( at night, preferably from 9pm on going ) you’ll only be spending 7 to 18 dollars!!! And regardless of the time the most you’ll ever spend is 36!! What your spending 50 to 60$ A pump so if you think ( shade here ) but who’s really losing out. And enough superchargers around and if your ever outside of ny you can always find a nearby station on your car’s touchscreen

Thank you for enlightening me. That’s the benefit of these forums. I didn’t know Tesla qualified for Black, for example, and I didn’t know the potential of Black in daily earnings. I just have a question: are you charging DAILY for $7-18 or is it every couple/few days? I’m glad EV is working out for you.

If it was for personal use it would last you about 2 days but with it being used for taxi it’ll last you about a day to a day and half depending on how much range your car has. For example if your car gives you 300 to 310 miles it will last a day and half and ones that give you 315 to 330 miles of range will definitely last you 2 days ( I wouldn’t suggest buying any teslas with a range lower then 300 ) now their are models that give you even more range then this like the model S and X that gives you anywhere from 370 to 400 miles which I believe is your best bet because it will last you the longest but teslas with those ranges are very expensive but long term it’s beneficial. And again early mornings or evenings, charging is very cheap but again you’ll never pay more then 36 regardless of the time unless you buy the highest range which you’ll pay about 40 to 45$ but that’s not the average, the average is always 7 to 18$

Let’s, say, for vehicle of 300 mile the range can vary depending on the season, am I right? For example, wouldn’t the range be closer to 100 or so miles in the winter because you’re using the heat in the cabin?

Expand full comment

Yes in the winter or colder weather The battery will die quicker then normal but it won’t be that drastic, if that happens then your battery is failing

Great information. Thanks for taking the time out to respond. Safe driving.

Who would buy a model s for ride share it’s over 100k omg you guys giving people bad advise .

Expand full comment

My friend stop talking if you don’t know what your talking about you can get a 2020 or 2021 model S for 60 to 70,000$ depending on the mileage and range capacity,( which is no different then anyone buying a suburban or Escalade) and people should buy a model S or Y because as I stated earlier it qualifies for Uber black and if you have a model Y and X you qualify for lyft black suv. And everyone knows hybrids would be the best option but they are not giving out plates for hybrids and as for your beloved WAV vehicles Uber and lyft limits the kinds of rides you get because they want to keep wav cars in the city so if you enjoy doing 5 and 10$ trips all day than go right ahead a buy you a wav car. There’s plenty of body shops that service teslas so again what are you talking about, there’s two actually right by where I live

Expand full comment

You’re funny with all this talk about how much you can make with Tesla but neglect to say if someone hit you your car is down for mths because not enough Tesla approve shop . And his gas can last him 2 days because he’s driving a hybrid with a wav car and on top of that plenty mechanic to fix it .

Excellent points!

I forget you add in summer you don’t get that 300 miles with Tesla because you’re running ac and winter is the same . And please tell him how much more your insurance is for a Tesla because parts are expensive. To top it off now they are totaling Tesla with certain damage . Yes wav is expensive but a hybrid car is better for rideshare than a Tesla

This is a good article on charging EVs and, most importantly, the time it takes to do so. It can take as little as under an hour at a super charging station to as much as two whole days if done from a regular plug at home:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the article! We recently did a piece on the EV transition for NYC TLC drivers and why it might be tricky (as you allude to). When this the application expected to open? Where is the “statement of interest” Submitted?

Great question, after January 11th meeting is our best guess. In terms of the “statement of interest”, the TLC will likely create an online form to submit it, but they’re yet to give more specifics.

For use as NYC yellow cab there is a list we can direct you to. For working with Uber / Lyft / other base in NYC there aren’t specific restrictions (at least not yet). Are you asking as an NYC TLC driver that works with Uber / Lyft?

I had tlc. Plates 3 years ago a lady hit me and my family inside car and totaled it , in ct. after injured parties were unable to work entire year and my child traumatized I was only person working to keep bills half way afloat in queens ny, the insurance didn’t pay what was left on car loan. And left a huge mess followed by medical bills. Left us in a great debt. The salvage yard in ct. returned or destroyed the tlc plates ever since I’m still renting plates paying out of pocket CANT get out of debt I think all this unfair every person situation should be looked at differently , unable to afford a house mortgage I rent 3rd floor apt. Even I’d I could afford an electric vehicle which I cannot, how could I charge it,? My brother and I share car for work day/night while my wife walks sometimes miles to get milk or food for our two kids. I feel terrible for what happened to the yellow cab men over medallion loosing value however as a sole proprietor, with bad credit and no savings were all out here together struggling, g singh driver since 2017 Uber and year lyft. Thousands of trips work 7 days a week. And still for example couldn’t even afford my daughter first grade photos , it’s grace if god we get by and hard on entire city especially after pandemic. That was a key factor in ruining lives of so many unfortunate families in every country , giasom@aol.com

Genuinely sorry to hear about your troubles. Few questions (making public as it might help others).

- Was the accident 3 years ago determined to be your fault or the other driver’s (or split)? Did the other driver have insurance?

- You had a TLC Plates under your name (?), but then lost the plates (?) post the accident? Did this happen pre or post pandemic?

If you can answer these questions, we may have some ideas for you. Thanks!

Do we need to have a fully electric car to apply? Or plans to at least get one? As well as it cannot be a hybrid correct?

Expand full comment
author

TLC is guiding that you should NOT buy an electric car (EV) until AFTER your application is accepted AND you get a confirmed allocation (ie you’ll have 90-120 days to complete everything probably, post getting approved allocation). The online TLC application (“statement of interest”) is set to go live in mid-March. It can’t be a hybrid, has to be 100% full electric. Hope that’s helpful!

My question is how would a statement be submitted? Where? How? (Online, via mail?)If im interested in a plate what is it that I should do to apply?

Thank you for the kind words 🙏. As of now, it appears it will be an online form, submitted on the TLC website. For now, until more specific details are released by the TLC (should be very shortly), would start thinking about how you would "make the case" to the TLC about being allocated to a new FHV License. It's just our guess, but the "Statement of Interest" will likely revolve around a question(s) like "Why do you believe you should be granted a new EV-only FHV License?".

As more details are released, we will keep this newsletter up to date. Hope that helps!
