The NYPD said a cab passenger robbed his driver of $80 after taking a ride from Hell's Kitchen to East Village. The police are still searching for the passenger.
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A cab passenger robbed his driver of $80 after riding from Hell’s Kitchen to the East Village on Sunday, the NYPD said.
The 51-year-old cabbie picked the man up at West 44th Street and Ninth Avenue around 1 p.m. on Sunday, police said.
When the two got to East 13th Street and University Place, the man told the cab driver he had to get money from a friend inside a store on 14th Street, the NYPD said.
The driver went into the store when the man didn’t return after a few minutes, and the two walked back to the cab together, at which point the man pulled out an “unknown” black object and demanded cash, police said.
The cab driver handed over $80, and the man fled north on 7th Avenue with the money, the NYPD said.
Police are now searching for the cab passenger, who is around 5-foot-9, weighs around 200 pounds and was last seen wearing a blue face mask, a black leather jacket, light blue jeans and white sneakers.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
