🚔 Stolen SUV Hits People, Bicyclist, Yellow Cab & FHV in Midtown Manhattan
In another chaotic Manhattan police chase, pedestrians, a bicyclist, a yellow cab and another TLC-plated vehicle were hit by a stolen vehicle. Suspect restrained by public after attempting to flee
The NYPD says the driver of a stolen car was taken into custody after hitting 10 people in Manhattan on Tuesday evening.
According to CBS News New York, the police stated a license plate reader tipped officers to the stolen maroon Hyundai SUV with Illinois plates at 45th St & 2nd Avenue at around 5:30pm. The NYPD then followed that vehicle at a low rate of speed because of heavy traffic.
The driver of the stolen car then hit a bicyclist on Lexington Avenue, somewhere between 42nd and 43rd streets, and then proceeded to hit a yellow cab, before making a U-turn in the middle of the intersection at Lexington and 42nd and hitting a black TLC-plated vehicle, along with pedestrians.
“Carlos Cabrera, who works in the area, told PIX11 News he saw a marked patrol car with lights and sirens trying to pull over a red car. Cabrera said the driver hit the gas, swerved around a bus, hit a yellow cab, went up on the sidewalk, and made a U-Turn before crashing head-on into a ride-share driver.”
Officials said the people injured ranged in age from 6 to 72. Eight of them were transported to Bellevue Medical Center and two refused medical attention. Some of the injuries were ankle-related and abrasions, but all are non-life threatening.
Citizens Arrest
In what’s becoming a viral moment, pedestrians tackled and restrained the fleeing driver of the stolen vehicle and held him down until cops arrived. The NYPD are still looking for the female passenger, who was a passenger in the stolen vehicle, that fled the scene.
20 year old Kyle Fernandez is facing charges including reckless endangerment, possession of stolen property, operating a motor vehicle while on drugs, resisting arrest, and others in connection to Tuesday’s chaotic police chase. According to the New York Post, Fernandez also has a previous criminal record, including two gun charges and drug-related offenses.
This incident comes after another West Side police chase, just a few days ago, involving a potentially stolen TLC-plated red Tesla.
