Where Have All The Yellow Cabs Gone?
Only 3,889 Yellow Cabs (out of ~13,500 Medallions) were active in April 2021. It's over 400% up from pandemic lows (992 active in April 2020), but still over 60% lower than pre-COVID levels
NBC New York reports (story above) on the state of the NYC yellow cab industry. Although the number of active yellow taxis are up from pre-pandemic lows, the total number still remains over 60% below pre-pandemic levels when there over 10,000 active yellow medallion cabs on the road. The NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) mentioned that there are currently an “adequate” number of taxis servicing current demand with most drivers generating 15-22 rides per shift. As the City reopens again it’ll be interesting to see how the yellow cab industry fares, especially as it works through active medallion debt restructuring negotiations with the City.
How do you think the next 6 months look for the yellow cab industry? The FHV industry in general?
