Gravity Technologies to Launch Tesla Model Y NYC Yellow Cab Fleet
Gravity wants to help modernize and electrify the NYC yellow taxi
Gravity CEO Moshe Cohen talks to Yahoo Finance about their upcoming Model Y yellow cab fleet pilot. From the interview and other sources we’ve read it appears Gravity is working with existing medallion owners to help launch the Tesla Model Y pilot program (although it’s not absolutely clear, I would doubt any new medallions are being issued, but rather Gravity is working with existing owners/fleets). Also of note is Gravity’s ability to convince the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) to approve the Model Y as a yellow taxi (thus far only the Tesla Model 3 had been approved). Gravity believes the Model Y’s roomier interior and longer range will serve as a better yellow cab (i.e. can do multiple shifts easier given range) than the Model 3.
“By reimagining the legacy of the iconic yellow taxi, Gravity is bringing a new value to travel that the City needs. We wholeheartedly applaud the TLC and the commissioner for their forward-looking BEV pilot and look forward to being a big part of it.” - Matt Daus, Gravity Advisor and Regulatory Counsel (former TLC Commissioner)
As Gravity’s CEO states in the interview, their background as luxury transportation company will influence the look and feel of their yellow cabs (i.e. installing interactive 22” flat screens, Wi-Fi, AI that monitors driver behavior). In addition, Gravity also wants to play a big role in helping expand charging infrastructure in NYC and is working with partners, including Con Edison.
