🕵️ Revel, Hertz, City Politics: Observations, Not Accusations
Recent podcast peaked interest related to statements made about Revel & Hertz's EV-only TLC Plate allocation from March process
After publishing a discussion, in partnership with NYC Taxi News’ Abe Mittleman and Carolyn Protz, with NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission Chair David Do, we’ve received a lot of great feedback 🙏. We’ve also had multiple incomings related to some statements that were made regarding our estimate of Revel and Hertz’s EV-only TLC Plate allocation from the 1,000 *new* FHV License (TLC Plate) release earlier this year.
In our YouTube upload of the podcast (see below), I share a ~8 minute introduction that provides more specific clarification around comments on Revel and Hertz’s publicly disclosed (via NYC Open Data) allocation of *new* EV-only TLC Plates.
FYI: bit of an interesting piece of American taxi history brought to our attention by NYC_TMODA (Carolyn Protz). The founder of Hertz (John D. Hertz) appears to have started his entrepreneurial journey in the taxi industry back in 1910!!! It also appears using the color yellow 🟨 for cabs (a color still prominently featured in Hertz’s logo as well) may have also been his idea!
“After becoming a car salesman in 1904, John Hertz was so successful that he became a partner in an automobile agency. Part of the profits was in cars taken in for trade, which he put into service as taxicabs.
By 1910, he was pursuing the taxicab business in earnest, and in 1915, he created the Yellow Cab Company. By 1940, he had his own taxicab manufacturing plant, which he eventually expanded to include bus and truck manufacturing.
In 1924, John purchased Rent-a-Car Inc., changed the name to Hertz Drive-Ur-Self Stations, and within two years created the first coast-to-coast rental network.”
