With the biannual FHV license determination (aka TLC plate cap decision) due soon, the NYC TLC market likely needs to come to terms with the limited vehicle status quo
When you say $20k annually, and weβre not saying we donβt hear your argument, that includes the following:
- Car payment + any financing cost
- NY sales tax
- Maintenance for a TLC car
- TLC insurance ($5,000+ annually)
- DMV & TLC administrative fees
- Working Capital coverage / flexibility
The real underlying figure for just the vehicle is likely around $8k to $10k per year, if not less. $8k to $10k per year is about $750 per month for the car.
What you may want to concentrate your argument on is more to do with FHV lease caps, like the taxi medallion industry has.
Remember, medallion owners will also not be happy about plates opening up again. Lots of different dynamics, but understand the frustration and your overall point, which is a valid one.
I understand your point but drivers who already drive tlc cars from a fleet can't get a plate why can't those drivers be given the opportunity to own the vehicle, also most of the car fleet vehicles are charged high rent for very run down cars
Weβll play a bit here and present to you what we believe a taxi medallion owner will argue. Theyβll say something along the lines of βif youβre serious about the business buy a medallionβ or a WAV. How would you respond to that?
**Their** argument will be if you want TLC vehicle access you can buy a medallion or plate a WAV. What would your response be out of curiosity (that is how many will frame it)? They will say opening up TLC plates again will devalue the medallion
We understand the point of view, but taxi medallion owners may not be sympathetic, given their large investment in the industry. How do you feel about the idea of βlease capsβ to prevent abuse?
Tlc plates should be given to full time drivers who are renting from these fleet owners paying 20k annually very unfair!

So they are ok with me buying a madallion or a wav but if I want a tlc plate then there's an issue

One should be given the choice to have their own plate or rent. Poor drivers should not be left at the mercy of fleet owners
