NYC TLC Launches EV Pilot - Vehicles from Tesla, VW, Hyundai, Audi, Kia & Ford Pre-Approved
TLC hacks up first EV yellow cab, a Kia Nero EV, as part of EV Taxi Pilot Program and issues special 50th Anniversary Medallions inspired by designer Massimo Vignelli. Pilot program to last 1 year
The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Taxi Pilot Program is officially live. With the pilot program’s official launch, the TLC also announced a list of pre-qualified EVs based on interior volume, comfort, ease of entry/exit from vehicle and range, that yellow cab medallion owners may use (Note: the Tesla Model 3 has already been approved to be used as an NYC yellow cab, which is why we believe it’s not included in the list below).
The first “hacked-up” yellow cab in the EV Pilot program also was affixed with a special 50th Anniversary medallion design inspired by designer Massimo Vignelli, whose works influenced the NYC Subway. The TLC stated that it is committed to improving the experience of TLC-Licensed Drivers when they provide service, and will evaluate the 12-month pilot through data analysis and communication with drivers and medallion owners.
“Electric is the future for the Taxi industry, and this pilot will help ensure that many more Electric Taxis provide service in New York City…The pilot will also help TLC evaluate how Electric Vehicles can improve the experience of Drivers and Medallion Owners, and it will look at how Licensees can save money on fuel and maintenance, as well as through tax credits, rebates, and toll discounts, while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. It is fitting that the Taxis hacked up today are the first to showcase the new Taxi Medallion, since Electric is the way forward for New York City.” - TLC Commissioner and Chair Aloysee Heredia Jarmoszuk
